The article “The Geography of Americans Who Work from Home” notes that the advancement of internet technology has created an explosion of telecommuters in many knowledge-based industries. Citing the October, 2012 U.S. Census Bureau report, the article states, “Nationally, the number of workers responding that they worked exclusively at home increased by 1.8 percentage points (4.8 percent to 6.6 percent) from 1997 to 2010.” That’s over 3 million people.
Those figures are likely to increase as the individual, business, and governmental savings for telecommuting are realized: “If those with compatible jobs and a desire to work from home did so just half the time . . . the national savings would total over $700 billion a year.”
