Why choose onlays & appliques for your cabinetry

A popular design choice for cabinets is the use of onlays & appliques, decorative additions such as scrolling wood and other designs carved in different materials that add a unique and atmospheric touch to your cabinetry.
What are some good reasons to select onlays and appliques?
Variety.  There's a wide range of onlays and appliques you can choose from.  Some of the designs include fleur-de-lis, leaf scrolls, rosettes, and even faces, such as the visage of a classic lion.  Other designs are more abstract.  You would be able to find something suited to your personal taste and to the overall decor in a particular room.  For instance, while some designs might seem out of place in a room that has minimalistic or modern decor, they would be at home in a room with a more traditional or antique appearance.
Uniqueness.  Adding these decorative features could enhance the uniqueness of your cabinetry.  Just as the cabinets themselves can be customized for any room in your home, the onlays and appliques will make your cabinets look truly individualized, as if they were carved just for you.
Visual interest and aesthetic appeal.  Well-chosen onlays and appliques draw the eye and make the cabinetry look not only more visually interesting, but also beautiful; they highlight other features in the cabinetry and in the room as a whole.  Your cabinets shouldn't be purely functional.  Along with their utility, they should also look lovely and contribute to the overall beauty of your home.
Richness.  High-quality onlays and appliques can make your cabinetry appear more expensive.  But you won't need to spend a lot of money to achieve this effect.

What separates a well–made cabinet from a cheap imitation?

People attempting to sell you cheap cabinetry will emphasize the low prices and point out the superficial features that seem to make the cheap imitation look like the real thing.
However, there are clear differences between a well-made cabinet and a cheap imitation; settling for the cheaper option won't be a good choice in the long-run.
When considering what separates a well-made cabinet from a cheap imitation, which qualities stand out?
The use of particle board in cheaper cabinets
Instead of solid wood or plywood, cheap cabinets usually use particle board for everything from the shelves to the doors to the cabinet box.  Particle board is made of wood scraps that have been recycled, including wood chips and sawdust.
What are the problems with it? The material has a much greater susceptibility to water damage; this is particularly problematic for cabinets that are closer to the floor or under a sink, but over time it will affect all cabinets, even those further up off the ground.  Because of its tendency to soak up moisture, particle board is more likely to get discolored and to swell.  It won't be long before it starts to peel, crack, and sag.
Poorer craftsmanship in cheaper cabinets
In cheaper cabinetry, the shelves, mounting strips and other cabinet components are usually too thin and flimsy.
The drawers, often made of stapled or glued particle board, will be more likely to get stuck or make noise when opened or closed; they won't have high-quality joinery, in particular dovetail joinery.  The drawer slides will be thin strips of metal that are more apt to malfunction; in constrast, high-quality cabinet drawers often have sturdier, full-extension steel slides that also self-close.
The cabinetry will have a cheap finish, which shows itself in scratches and deterioration.  Cabinet doors made from cheap material, such as laminate on particle board, will be more likely to chip and crack.
Even though these cheaper cabinets are called 'imitations,' they really don't resemble well-made cabinetry.
Why go for high-quality cabinetry?
A well-made cabinet will last longer and look beautiful.  And though they're more expensive than the cheaper imitations, they don't need to be prohibitively expensive if you get them from the right place.  Furthermore, they'll save you money in the long-run; you won't need to keep replacing or fixing them, and if you ever sell your home, you can count on them increasing the value of your property.

Get the Most Out of Your Laundry Room with Custom Cabinets

Does your laundry room need to be more organized? If you are like most homeowners, the answer is probably yes! Laundry rooms by definition should be highly functional spaces where the weekly care of clothes can be done efficiently. Yet in many homes it is a high traffic area that also serves as a dumping spot for family members, adding chaos to what is already a cramped and cluttered space. Sadly most people tend to invest a minimum of their home improvement budget on their laundry room.
Here are some ideas for organizing your laundry room:
Allocate space for a mud room set-up. If your laundry room is also the family entrance, create storage by the door to organize the family’s stuff--outer wear, keys, backpacks, umbrellas. That way everyone knows where to leave things upon entry, and where to get them with they leave.
Create adequate storage.  The smaller your space is, the more organized it has to be. Invest in wall to wall cabinets to get organized. Assign storage space for laundry supplies, kits for minor sewing repairs and shoe care. Designate a “lost sock” drawer and a “lost and found” basket for items found in pockets.
Raise your washer and dryer off the floor. Go easy on your back by installing washer/dryer pedestals with built-in storage. If you have limited space, consider stacking your washer and dryer (this only works for front-loading machines!)
Have a storage solution for your ironing board. A closet with a pull-out mechanism for your ironing board is neat and efficient. Or lacking space, get creative with a couple of decorative heavy-duty hooks and hang your board off the wall. To hang clothes for air drying or to hold freshly ironed shirts, mount a tension rod or a towel rack under some shelving. A retractable clothes line is a good option for smaller spaces.
Beyond function… If you’re one of the the lucky ones who have a lot of space in their laundry room, why not elevate a weekly chore to a pleasant experience? Perhaps you have space for a desk or a sewing table. A built-in entertainment center might seem like the height of luxury--but what better place to watch the morning soap, or catch up on the news?
With some thought and a little investment, you can transform your laundry room into the efficient, well-organized space you deserve. We can help you design custom storage and cabinets for your laundry room. Contact us for a free quote, or for more information.
